PRIMARY HYPERHIDROSIS SURGERY IN MURCIA

Primary hyperhidrosis is excessive sweating that mainly affects the palms of the hands, feet or armpits, without any known underlying disease. It is related to increased activity of the sympathetic nervous system, which runs inside the chest forming what is known as the sympathetic chain. This condition can affect the patient’s daily life, making activities such as writing on paper, using a keyboard, shaking hands, caressing, handling tools or playing musical instruments difficult, and it can also affect social, work and romantic relationships.

SURGICAL TREATMENT OF PRIMARY HYPERHIDROSIS

There are different treatments for primary hyperhidrosis, such as topical antiperspirants, systemic medications, iontophoresis or botulinum toxin. However, in patients with profuse sweating, these alternatives do not always provide sufficient relief. In these cases, thoracic surgery for primary hyperhidrosis consists of sectioning the sympathetic chain at different levels according to the patient’s degree of sweating, using a minimally invasive technique performed through a single 12 mm incision in the armpit, through which an optical scope and endoscopic surgical instruments are introduced.
